Del protoitálico *ke, y este del protoindoeuropeo *ḱe/*ḱi ("esto, aquí").3 Compárese el hitita 𒆠 (ki, "esto"), 𒆠𒉡𒌦 (ki-nu-un, kinun, "ahora"), el prusiano antiguo schis ("esto"), el eslavo eclesiástico antiguo sъ ("esto"), y el protogermáncio *χi-, *χe- ("esto").3
