Del protoitálico *aus(i)-, y este del protoindoeuropeo *h₂eus-1, o bien *h₂óus-2. Compárese el irlandés antiguo áu, el avéstico uši (dual) «ambas orejass», el griego antiguo οὖς (oŷs), el prusiano antiguo āusins, el eslavo eclesiástico antiguo uxo y el gótico 𐌰𐌿𐍃𐍉 (auso).1
