Del protoitálico *odeo- ("oler"), y este del protoindoeuropeo *h₃ed-/*h₃d- ("oler").1 Compárese el griego antiguo ὄζω (ódzō, "oler"), el lituano úosti ("oler") y el eslavo eclesiástico antiguo jadati ("investigar, explorar").1
