Del protoitálico *wal-ē-, y este del protoindoeuropeo *h₂ulh₁-eh₁- ("ser fuerte"), de *welH-.1 Compárese el hitita hulla-, hulliya- ("aplastar, derrotar"), 𒄷𒌌𒆷𒊍𒍣 (hu-ul-la-az-zi, 3 sg. pres. act.), el prusiano antiguo weldisnan (acu.sg., "herencia"), el lituano valdyti ("gobernar"), el gótico 𐍅𐌰𐌻𐌳𐌰𐌽 (waldan, "gobernar"), el alemán antiguo walten ("dominar") y el tocario B walo ("rey").1
