Del inglés medio devil, devel, deovel, del inglés antiguo dēofol, dēoful, del temprano dīobul ("diablo"), del latín diabolus, del griego antiguo διάβολος (diábolos), "calumniador", usado como traducción del hebreo antiguo שטן (satán), "acusador", de διαβάλλω (diabállō, "calumniar"), y este de διά (diá), "a través", y βάλλω (bállo, "arrojar"), en última instancia del protoindoeuropeo *gʷelh₁-.
