Del protoitálico *oktōgmta, y este del protoindoeuropeo *h₃(e)ḱtéh₃-ḱomt-h₂ del protoindoeuropeo *h₃(e)ḱtéh₃-dḱomt-h₂ ("ocho décadas"). Compárese el griego antiguo ὀγδοήκοντα (ogdoēkonta), el sánscrito aśītí- y el avéstico clásico aštāiti-.1
