Del protoitálico *sēmi-, y este del protoindoeuropeo *sēm-i ("en uno").1 Compárese el sánscrito ásāmi ([adv.] "no por la mitad", "completamente"), el griego antiguo ἡμι- (hēmi-, "medio"), el inglés antiguo sām- ("medio") y el alemán antiguo sāmi- ("medio").1
