Del irlandés medio tóir ("socorro, asistencia; refuerzo; persecución"), sustantivo verbal de *to-fo-reth-, del irlandés medio foreithid, del irlandés medio reithid,12 en última instancia del protoindoeuropeo *roth₂-.3 El mismo origen comparte el término inglés Tory ("político conservador"), a través del gaélico clásico tóruighe, tóiridhe ("saqueador; salteador").4
