Del protoitálico *septmāgmta (> *septumā- > *septuwā- > septuā-), y este del protoindoeuropeo *septṃ-ḱomt-h₂ del protoindoeuropeo *septṃ-dḱomt-h₂ ("siete décadas"). Compárese el griego antiguo ἑβδομήκοντα (hebdomēkonta).1
