Etimología editar
De origen náutico, cuando un velero tiene "tres escotas al viento" es porque está en condiciones de tormenta fuerte con olas muy altas, lo que hace que gire de lado a lado con cada ola, en peligro continuo de volcarse. Por eso, este término se ha utilizado para describir a una persona altamente ebria que ya no tiene el control y está en peligro de volcarse y caerse.
