Del irlandés antiguo cride (gaélico escocés cridhe, manés cree), del protoindoeuropeo *ḱerd-. Compárese el bretón medio creis ("centro"), el galés craidd ("centro"), el latín cor, el gótico 𐌷𐌰𐌹𐍂𐍄𐍉 (háirtō), el ruso сердце (serdtse) o el sánscrito हृद् (hṛd).23
