Del protoitálico *opi-, y este del protoindoeuropeo *h₃ep-(i-)/*h₃op-(i-) ("abilidad", "fuerza"), de *h₃ep- ("trabajar").1 Compárese el hitita happina ("rico"), el sánscrito ápnas ("poseción", "propiedad") y el griego antiguo ὄμπνη (ómpnē "alimento", "cereal").1 → omnis, opīmus, opus
