Del protoitálico *jowas- o *jūs-, y este del protoindoeuropeo *iuH-s- ("caldo", "sopa").^[1] Compárese el sánscrito यूष (yūṣa, "caldo"), el griego antiguo ζύμη (dzýmē, "levadura") y (aunque más difícil de conectar) ζωμός (dzōmós, "salsa", "sopa"), el prusiano antiguo juse ("caldo", "sopa") y el lituano juše ("caldo", "sopa").^[1]

Líquido obtenido al cocinar carne, pescado, vegetales, etc., caldo, sopa, o similar.^[2]

Del protoitálico *jowos, y este del protoindoeuropeo *h₂i-eu-s^[1], o bien *yew(e)s-^[3]. Compárese el irlandés antiguo uisse ('justo'), el sánscrito योस् (yóṣ) ("de la vida") y el avéstico gatha yaoš ("vida", "salud").^[1]
