Del protoitálico *okʷs-mn-, y este del protoindoeuropeo *h₃ekʷ-s ("ver").2 Se intentó hacer la conexión con el hitita -zi ("creer", "confiar") pero semánticamente no es convincente.2 Otros reconstruyen *h₃ekʷ-s-mn ("avistamiento") cuyo sentido es más cercano, compárese el griego antiguo ὄψομαι (opsomai, "ver").2
