Del irlandés antiguo cobraithir, compuesto de co ("con") y beirid ("portar"), del protocelta *kom y *ber-, y éstos del protoindoeuropeo *kom ("con") y *bʰer- ("portar"). Compárense el gaélico escocés cobhair y los paralelos en galés cymeryd ("tomar"), bretón kemer ("tomar") y latín conferre ("reunir")
