Del protoitálico *louk-, y este del protoindoeuropeo *leuk- ‘brillar’. Su forma arcaica en latín es leuks, la cual evolucionó fonéticamente louks hasta cambiar a lux.1 Compárese el hitita lukk-ᵗᵗᵃ ‘esclarecer, amanecer’, el sánscrito रोचते (rócate) ‘brillar’, el griego antiguo λευκός (leukós) ‘claro, luz’, el galés llug ‘luz’, el gótico 𐌻𐌹𐌿𐌷𐌰𐌸 (liuhaþ) ‘luz’ y el tocario B luk- ("brillar").1
