Del inglés medio word, del inglés antiguo word, del protogermánico *wurðan (cognados: el gótico 𐍅𐌰𐌿𐍂𐌳 (waurd), el frisón antiguo word y el alemán antiguo wort), del protoindoeuropeo *wr̥dʰo-.2 Compárese el latín verbum, el lituano var̃das ("nombre");2 así como el sánscrito व्रत (vratá, "voluntad", "ley", "orden", etc.).
